Silly Moving Superstitions (Part Three)
My now you are probably starting to feel a little paranoid. You may be thinking, “Jeez there are a lot of superstitions to worry about!” There are more superstitions in the world that you could worry about in a lifetime. So really, why worry about any of them? We prefer to look at superstition in search of practical advice for real life. When you analyze these superstitions carefully, you may genuinely be able to learn something. This is going to be our last posting on moving related superstitions, so let’s dive into it.
- Acorn Please Protect Me
The evolution of this acorn related myth is actually very well documented. It is rooted in Norse tradition. According to this myth, individuals can protect themselves from lightning strikes by placing acorns on each of their windowsills. As far as we know, acorns do not have any protective powers and work rather poorly as insulators. They are really useful if you are interested in making friends with the neighborhood squirrels, but that is probably not your goal here. While there may be a force at work here we do not understand (Thor, is that you?) you would probably be better off not depending on acorns for protection.
- This Seems Backwards
To trace this superstition to its origins we have to look at Ireland. According to this rather interesting superstition the first time you enter a new abode you must walk backwards through the front door. Also, you must leave through that same door. Again, backwards. If you fail to take these steps you will be full of a sense of restlessness and unease for the entire time you are living there. Sounds terrible doesn’t it? What’s the harm in following this superstition? Just don’t trip over the doorjamb please!
