Starting the New Year Off Right, Self Storage

The new year is here! Welcome to 2018, let’s get off on the right foot. This time on the Albuquerque Self Storage blog we wanted to start the year by revisiting a topic we covered last January. Back on January 16th, 2017 we discussed why you need to visit your storage unit in the new year. We’re hitting this topic again because it is necessary to cover it for new readers, and it can help all of us frequent guests remember to start the year off right.

Visiting Your Self Storage Unit in the New Year

Let’s say you rented out a storage unit last August when your eldest kid went off to college. You cleaned out their room, made some extra space. It’s been 5 months now and you don’t need to get anything out of it. Do you need to visit the unit?

Well. Yeah!

There are a few reasons that it would benefit you to visit your self storage unit regularly, even without needing to grab anything. Clean, Inspect, and Consolidate.

Dust is going to gather inside the unit no matter how hard you try. When things sit, dust sits, and gathers, and seemingly multiplies. You don’t want to come looking for a certain thing only to start coughing and choking on dust when you find it. By doing regular, simple cleaning checks every few months you can make sure the items stored are exactly in the shape you need them in when you go to get them out. That leads us to the next point.

Inspect

Inspecting the self storage unit is something we have talked about a good deal over the past year. It is the idea that while you are there cleaning or moving things, take a look about the perimeter of your unit. Look around the ceiling, the edges, the floor. You’re looking for any signs of leaking or damage. The last thing anyone wants is to return to their storage unit looking to pull out that extra bed for the sister in law only to find it and everything else is completely ruined from water damage or rats taking up residence inside. By doing a basic look around whenever you visit the unit you can be sure that damage isn’t occurring and is prevented from getting out of hand. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure after all!

Consolidate

When we say consolidate we mean the process of keeping, getting rid of, or otherwise manipulating your belongings in self storage. This isn’t necessary for everyone using a self storage unit of course. Some folks just need to store a few spare parts, or a piece of furniture, and with those inside they don’t need to worry about anything else. That is not the case for everyone however.

Many people use self storage as a way to declutter their homes and to get excess belongings out of the way. If you are one of them, then it might be worth your time to check into your unit and do a rundown of what’s in it. Are these items you need to keep for possible later use? Or are these boxes of old magazines really useless to you now, it just took a few months of being out of sight to realize it?

Regardless of whether you decide to keep or to get rid of or donate, whenever you are returning to your storage unit throughout the year you should be looking to categorize your belongings.

Alright, there you have it. Three reasons to be visiting your storage unit regularly in 2018! We hope you keep these in mind when you visit so you can get the absolute most and best use out of your self storage unit. Don’t have one? Contact Albuquerque Self Storage and we can get you a storage unit today and start of 2018 on the right foot.
