How to Have an Organized Home
Welcome back to the Albuquerque Self Storage Blog! So, you weren’t born with organization skills, but you are ready to give it a try. Follow our tips and tricks on how to have an organized home and you won’t have any problems!
Getting rid of unnecessary items in your home can be one of the most difficult tasks to complete. You may tell yourself, “Well one day in the future I may use this,” or “I may need this randomly one day,” … be realistic, if you haven’t used it in over a year you probably won’t use it anytime soon!
Do you really need all those pots and pans underneath your stove? A few different sizes are fine, but 10 different pans may not be necessary. What about the toys your kids haven’t played with in 15 years? Children elsewhere will love them if they are kept in good shape to be played with! Get rid of the stacks of magazines, clothes on the floor you don’t wear, and all of the knick-knacks that take up space.
The steps we have listed below to tidy up your room, closet, and whole house. We promise you will feel so much better about yourself and your new organized home once you get into the habit of following through on the choirs you set for yourself each day.
Donate
Don’t just throw items you no longer use or want in the trash, donate them! Whether you donate to The Salvation Army, Goodwill, or a local shelter your generosity will help someone in need. The best way to follow through on this is to keep donation bags in every closet. Once your clothes no longer fit, or you realize you probably won’t wear an item again put it in the bag. If you no longer wear shoes that you loved 5 years ago, someone else will love them today.
Look in your linen closet, do you need 10 sets of sheets between 3 beds? Probably not. Give your linens, blankets, and extra towels to homeless shelters or animal shelters. Be sure everyone in the household keeps a donation bag in their closet.
Tidy Your Room
The best thing to do as soon as you wake up in the morning is to make your bed. Making your bed creates a feeling of tidiness, so why not start with that each day. Teach everyone in your household to do this every morning. Once your bed is made now you don’t have an excuse to place all that nice, clean, folded laundry on the floor. Pick it up (place it on the bed if you must for a moment) and put it away! Don’t allow your room to become cluttered on the floor, chairs, or bed and your mind will thank you later on!
Label
Everything in your house or apartment belongs somewhere. Whether you put mugs on one shelf, glasses on another, and dishes on another then label the shelf so everyone follows. Everything has its place, and everything should be in its place. In your drawers’ label which container holds forks, knives, and even where certain tools and pens go. This will help to keep each drawer and cabinet in tip-top shape. You can buy a label maker at Target or Walmart– believe us once it’s in your hands you’ll go wild!
Clean, Clean, Clean
Okay, so this whole article talks about organizing and cleaning your house, but we can’t forget to wipe down the house. Start by making sure you start the dishwasher each night and empty it each morning. This will help to keep dishes out of the sink throughout the day if it’s already emptied, which then leads to keeping dishes off of the counter. With clear counters it is quick and simple to wipe them down.
Next, whenever you use an item when cooking put it away or clean it immediately after use. This means everything is already wiped down and washed before you are even full of all that delicious food you made. When you clean up after yourself immediately you create an easy area to clean and wipe down each evening.
It can be difficult when you are rushing in the mornings to get everything done you need to, but if you start each morning making your bed, emptying the dishwasher, and throwing a load of laundry in believe us, you will thank yourself later in the evening. If you have any items you want to put into storage after going through your home to tidy it up contact us and we will discussion which unit will be the best for you!
