Albuquerque is a beautiful city nestled in the high desert with scenic mountain views. As the largest city in New Mexico, it offers unique experiences for residents and tourists alike to enjoy. There are daily scenic experiences such as hot air balloon rides, hikes, tram rides, food festivals, movie festivals, and unique experiences that aren’t offered anywhere else.
The Sandia Peak Tramway offers unmatched views of Albuquerque and the surrounding mountains. The 15 minute tram ride takes you 2.7 miles to the top of the 10,378-foot crest of Sandia Mountain and allows you to enjoy 11,000 square miles of panoramic views.
It’s more than a tram ride too; it’s an experience. You’ll be able to see the trees budding and the world waking up from its winter slumber. There is a restaurant on the peak too and ample viewing platforms for you and your family. Just bring a jacket — it gets cold up there!
The area is also a ski resort, if you’re interested in coming back in the winter.
Be sure to plan ahead! The tram relies on nice weather to operate, so it can be closed by rain, snow, or wind. Round-trip and one-way trips are available and prices differ depending on age, and military status.
2. Travel the World at the Albuquerque Zoo
If you’re looking for a day in the sun with your family or friends, the Albuquerque Zoo is a great choice. It features exhibits from all over the world, including Africa, Australia, and the North Pole!
If you’re looking for a more aquatic experience or a walk through nature, consider visiting the Aquarium/Botanical Gardens too.
The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the park closes at 5 p.m. Ticket prices vary based on age, the experience you choose, and residency.
3. Reserve a Seat at St. James Tea Room
If you want an experience like no other, reserve a seat during tea time at St. James Tea Room. The February’s menu allowed visitors to be enchanted by French cuisine and culture.
As their story states, “The St. James Tearoom sprang up out of the recognition of a great need in society today: the need to escape the ‘Tyranny of the Urgent’ of our modern day frenetic pace of life, to depart from the “parched landscape of fluorescent lighting and chain- restaurant sameness.”
All parties must make a reservation to attend. Check out their menu and this month’s theme! There is an abbreviated menu for children, though Albuquerque Self Storage recommends gathering a small group of adult friends to fully immerse yourself in the tea time experience.
The St. James Tea Room does not require or expect tips, as they pay their employees a living wage.
4. Be Captivated by the Annual Pueblo Film Fest
On March 20 through the 22, become captivated by the nation’s only Pueblo film festival. Presented by the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, this two-day experience features the words of Pueblo filmmakers and actors, as well as films that explore the Pueblo experience.
Albuquerque has deep historical roots and highlights them every month with festivals that celebrate the city’s heritage. Be sure to stay up to date on events to check them all out!
The weekend includes film screenings, presentations, and discussions with renowned Pueblo filmmakers. It is free, with a suggested $10 donation for attending. Visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to enjoy the event!
5. Experience the Southwest Chocolate and Coffee Fest
If you’re a fan of chocolate or a coffee-enthusiast, visit Albuquerque on March 20 through March 22 for the 10th Annual Southwest Chocolate and Coffee Fest. This is the nation’s largest festival dedicated to chocolate, coffee, and gourmet foods! It features the country’s finest chocolatiers, coffee roasters, candy makers, bakers, breweries, wineries, and gourmet food companies.
There will be live entertainment, professional cooking demonstrations, and a place for kids with free activities.
It will be in the state’s Expo Hall, located in the heart of Albuquerque. Ticket prices vary from $3 for ages 4-12, and $18 for anyone over the age of 13 for a weekend pass. General admissions is $12 online or $10 in person for those over the age of 13, and $3 for kids 4-12 years old. Additional fees apply for premium experiences.
