Any definitive list of must-sees in Albuquerque in August would usually be littered with event recommendations, and cool museums to see, but even with events postponed and museums closed, there is still so much to do and see in this beautiful city. The natural beauty of Albuquerque and the fascinating Spanish influence in the city offers so much to see, so let’s take a look!
Want to know what to do in Albuquerque first? Soak in the natural beauty
More than ever being outside in the fresh air isn’t just a fun practice, it’s a recommended one. So that makes scenic hikes and adventures, not just fun and enjoyable, but socially responsible as well, so bonus points! Not to boast or anything, but New Mexico offers some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Something about the sky just looks bigger in the southwest, a larger canvas for brilliant colors as the sun mosies on down. So the natural question becomes–where to best view our spectacular sunsets? We recommend taking advantage of the Sandia Peak Tramway, the world’s largest tram, to the observation deck at the top of the mountain for some truly stunning panoramic views of Albuquerque below.
At the base of the Sandia Peak Tramway begins the La Luz Trail, the lower portion of which offers desert vistas on well-worn hiking paths appropriate for casual hikers. If you’re up for a bit more of an adventure, we suggest taking the trail up to the peak and then taking the tram down. The full La Luz trail can be a challenge and a bit of a commitment at 8 miles, and you’ll need to make sure you are well prepared before you start your trek, but it is well worth it! Wear appropriate hiking shoes, make sure you have enough water and don’t forget to pack some snacks!
Viewing Albuquerque from the Sky
You might’ve heard about Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and you might’ve heard that it’s postponed until next year, but not to worry, you can still get your hot air balloon fix with private sunrise or sunset rides! Now while hot air balloon tours can’t promise chainsaw carving like the Fiesta, they do make up for it with truly stunning views of the Rio Grande Valley. Breathe in the fresh air, soar through the sky, and soak in all the sights Albuquerque has to offer. A sunrise launch is a once in a lifetime chance to have a breathtaking scenic experience as you fly above the city and desert landscape below.
If you’re looking to stay a little closer to the ground, take yourself on a tour from the comfort of your own car along the famous Route 66. If you’re looking for cool relics of a bygone era, this is the route to go. You’ll see classic motels, vintage gas stations, old buildings, and murals galore. Take a stop at the famous 66 Diner, grab some delicious grub to go, and enjoy a world-famous burger and shake that we promise will not disappoint. The place is iconic, and while you can’t sit in the 50’s style diner, you can eat curbside like you’re at a classic drive-in.
Route 66 a touch too modern for your tastes? Well, lucky for you just outside of Albuquerque is home to over 25,000 petroglyphs. What’s a petroglyph? It’s a picture that has been carved into rock, usually chiseled using some kind of stone tool. Archaeologists predict that the carvings are between 400 and 700 years old, and likely done by both Spanish settlers and ancestors of the Pueblo people. It’s a great chance to take in some natural history and to learn about not only early European influences in the area but of the native peoples that were in this land first. Still too modern? Lucky for you if you want some really vintage rock art, there are some petroglyphs that are suspected to date as far back as 2000 B.C. (or B.C.E. if yer feeling sciency).
And at the end of your day, you can finish it off by grabbing a famous Albuquerque craft beer, just mind your social distance while the brewery of your choice minds their business capacity.
