Solutions for Finding Lost Items

lost items

If you’re like us, then you spend a lot of time searching for your keys, wallet, or phone. Most of the time, they’re lost in the clutter of what you set down with it, or in a completely random place like in the fridge. Don’t worry, we’re not judging you — we’ve been there too. That’s why we at Albuquerque Self Storage came up with these time saving solutions for finding lost items.

Search Cluttered Spaces First

While it may go without saying, look in the cluttered spaces first. A study from University of Aberdeen in Scotland found that the brain tends to automatically search for things in the cleanest area first. This is usually because it’s the easiest place to look! You’re less likely to miss your keys on an open counter, right?

Before you start digging into the must cluttered pile, ask yourself if it makes sense to look here. Start in common areas, like the kitchen or bedroom, before moving on to other areas. It might take a bit more effort, but at least you might clean up a little in the process and hopefully find what you are looking for sooner.

Create a Reminder System

If you only use something once a month, or once a year, it would help to create a reminder system to make note of where you put it. It can be on a calendar, on a sticky note on the fridge, or whatever works for you! If the item is part of a pair and you only use one of the two, keep a note where you store the more used half. For example, if you own an instrument and keep the cleaner in another area of the house, you can put a note in the case to remind you where it is.

Make Spaces Work For You

Everyone has a different method of organizing their things. Some prefer piles, while others like to keep things separate. Organize your home and work space in a way that reflects your preferences so it’s harder for you to lose things. Think of using open shelves or cubbies to keep things off your desks and other surfaces.

If you prefer to keep things in one spot, consider a cabinet with doors so you don’t have to keep everything organized. Instead, you can just close the door if you have company over. When you’re looking for a shirt, you can open up the cabinet and search through the spot to get the one you have in mind.

Establish Routines

If you establish a routine, then you’ll know where everything is that you use every day. For example, normalize putting your keys on the table next to the door, your purse and your wallet on the dresser, and your jacket in your closet.

If you have trouble locating accessories, try keeping them in the same closet as the clothes you wear them with. Establish a routine where you take them off and bring them to the closet, instead of putting them on your nightstand or bathroom counter at the end of the night.

Set up a habit to fold and put away clothes as soon as possible after they come out of the dryer, too. That way, you’ll never lose that jacket, shirt, or pair of pants again, and they’ll be wrinkle free!

Use Apps to Help You Find Things

There isn’t anything an app can’t solve, including misplaced items. If you do all of the above and still can’t keep track of certain items, you can use apps, Bluetooth, and tracking chips to help. Check out these apps to help you:

  • Tile can track your wallet, backpack, and other items with small tags. You’ll be able to see your lost tagged item on a map on your phone, and the tag can make a sound to help you spot it
  • TrackR offers a coin-shaped tracker to attach to your purse, bike, or other belongings. In addition to helping you find misplaced items, you can tap a device to ring – and locate – your phone if needed
  • Duet helps you keep track of up to 10 of your valuables with colored tags, and also protects your phone
