Reinventing the Spare Room: Self Storage Solutions

Welcome back to another entry on the Albuquerque Self Storage blog. Today, we are tackling the topic of reinventing your spare bedroom. Although some of us have a spare bedroom that’s used almost every week, a majority of us use that spare room as a space to store unused stuff.

Allow yourself to dream for a minute. There are a million different ways that you could repurpose that room to suit your current, daily life. Maybe it’s to house a hobby that you are passionate about like -art, music, working out, or gaming- If you don’t know how to start or have just been too busy, you have come to the right place, because we are going to provide you with some ideas to help you get started and on your way to reinventing your spare room.

Consider Self Storage

Do you know what’s worse than an overflowing kitchen junk drawer? A room that has evolved into a messy “junk room.” We all know the room. The door stays shut when company comes over.

It’s the room you end up throwing all those miscellaneous items hanging out around your house in when you have to clean up with limited time. And, it is the one that you told yourself you would organize during COVID, but keep putting off.

Life is too short! Don’t let a precious room in your house go to waste. You could, and should, repurpose that space to be so much more. Self storage units are the perfect way to reclaim this space, and turn this once useless room into a functional area. Not only do they free up space, but they allow you to keep family heirlooms, antiques, things your kids want to keep, and furniture that you plan on using in your next home. They also give you the opportunity to store the items that you’re waiting to repair, sell, or give away to family members or friends.

Clean Out the Clutter

First, you will want to completely clear out the room. You might have the largest bedroom in the world, but if the space is littered with clutter, you will still feel as if you have no room at all. This step will help you better visualize your new space and get a sense of what you might have to purchase to make your reinvented spare room come to life.

As you remove items, make piles of what you want to keep, donate, or throw away (including furniture). We recommend adding color-coded Post-It notes to furniture, so you don’t have to physically move them right away.

Don’t feel pressure to get rid of things you still love or feel that you may still have use for. Remember, these things won’t necessarily need to be stored somewhere else in your home, like an already cluttered closet. A self storage unit solves this problem for you! This option is affordable, easy to access, and can function as a great storage alternative, allowing you to have more freedom and creative expression.

Finally, before you begin reinventing, it’s a great time to deep clean the space. Vacuum all of the dust and make the room feel like new—your future self will thank you for it!

Decide What You Want To Do With the Room

This is the fun part! Maybe your only thought going into this project was that you wanted to rid your house of clutter and finally have a functional guestroom. Great, but consider taking the project a bit further.

The sky’s the limit when it comes to reinventing your spare room. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how the space should function. If you have young children, you might want to turn the spare room into a playroom. This is a great option if you wish to get your children out of their individual rooms and interact together in a personalized space for them to share. Perhaps you might need a space away from your kids too—then turn your spare room into an office!

Another option is to turn the spare room into a space for you to unleash your creativity. This can be either an art, writing, or music room. You can also consider transforming the room into an office or study space.

If you are a bookworm and have a bunch of books lying around, consider displaying them in a beautiful home library. There are a multitude of ways to reinvent the spare room, and how you wish to transform that space is completely up to you!

Take Certain Steps to Maximize Space

When reinventing the spare room, no matter how you plan to utilize the space, you will want to make the most of it. Here are some easy ways that you can enlarge your space when designing your new room.

The first way to maximize your room space is to use closet organizers, bins and hanging wall organizers, such as a shoe rack. Walls are going to be your new best friend. Wall mounted shelves can be used to house books, decorations, art supplies, movies, or any other items that you wish to show off and not place in the back of your closet. If you don’t want to nail into the wall, bookshelves, easels with cork boards, and cube storage shelves are great alternatives as well.

When maximizing any space, organization is key. The way that you organize a room can change its entire aesthetic. You might consider repurposing a piece of furniture already in your possession. For instance, you can build a bookshelf or put-up new shelving by repurposing your old dresser. You can arrange the drawers in any manner you want and add a personal touch with a fresh coat of paint or artistic design.

Another way to easily maximize your space is by installing and covering the shelving with sliding mirrors. Many homes have smaller closet spaces with sliding doors. This can often be an eyesore and take up your much needed wall space. One way to optimize your room, while providing the illusion of a bigger space, is to install mirrors over the existing closet doors. This option is easy to do on your own and if you think that you might want to sell your home or get rid of the mirrors in the future, you can opt to hang them with removable wall hooks that won’t damage your closet doors.

Keep the Room Layout Simple

The main thing to remember when you are redesigning your spare bedroom is to keep the new room layout simple, clean, and clutter free. This will help make the space feel bigger and will reduce the chance of refilling the spare bedroom with the useless junk sitting around your house.

By keeping a simple layout, you will set yourself up for success in the future, saving time and money. You will save time by reducing the frequency of cleaning the room needs and you will save money by reducing the amount of items that you purchase. Remember, simple equals smooth sailing.

The Main Takeaways

When reinventing the spare room, it is important to design a space that is most comfortable and fun for you. Also, if you are looking around your currently cluttered spare room and feel like you just don’t have enough space to reinvent, now would be a great time to invest in a self storage unit. Self storage units are affordable, easy to access, and a great place to store unneeded items taking up much needed space around your house or spare bedroom. So, if you have an idea as to how your spare room would be better put to use, set aside that hesitation and begin your redesign project today.
