The Importance of Locks and Secure Self Storage

secure self storage

So you just invested in a storage unit, and you’re wondering how to keep your items as safe as possible. While choosing a safe facility is imperative, there is one major thing you can do to ensure secure self storage: invest in a quality lock!

The Importance of Storage Unit Locks

Imagine you’re a robber breaking into a storage unit and you know you don’t have much time before you’re caught. Which unit are you going to make your target? The one with the impressive and difficult-to-break lock? Or the simple combination lock that is easily picked or broken? It is better to be safe than sorry. That’s why we at Albuquerque Self Storage provide our clients with secure locks, and arm you with all the information you need to ensure the most secure self storage.

Details to Consider When Buying a Storage Unit Lock

Here are five key attributes that you should consider when choosing a lock for your storage unit.

Strength

Your lock should be strong enough to endure weather and wear over time. You don’t want to have to replace your lock every couple of months, which could cost you more money over time, and be less secure for your items in storage.

Price

When it comes to most locks, you get what you pay for. Investing in an expensive, high-quality lock may seem like a burden, but will be worth it in the long run. You want to ensure that your unit stays secure, even if you have to pay a little more up-front.

Reputation

Don’t believe every review you read! Make sure you are getting your information from informational sources and industry experts. Locks that make the cut over and over again from reputable websites are most likely a safe bet. Down below, we recommend three specific locks backed by trustworthy sources.

Shrouded Shackle

Shrouded shackles have an extended body that protects them from bolt cutters and prying. While these can be more costly, they offer much better protection for your unit and are definitely a worthy investment.

Type

There are three types of locks that are ideal for self storage. Cylinder, padlock, and disk locks are your three most desirable options. If you want to learn even more about secure self storage, check out our article on best practices for moving into your unit

Locks for Storage Units to Avoid

Chain locks are not a secure choice for your storage unit. These locks are ideal for protecting your bike on a rack, but are not difficult to break into for someone with ulterior motives. Chain locks can be easily cut with the right equipment. Plus, the length of the chain can prevent the door of your storage unit from closing completely, which is especially concerning if your unit is located in harsher weather. When it comes to your storage unit, we give this lock a 2 out of 5 score.

While combination locks are a tempting option due to their ease and convenience of use, they are not secure enough for your storage unit. There is no key involved; all you have to do is enter a code or number and you’re in. While they are an affordable option, they are not the right way to go. We have to give this type of lock a 1 out of 5 score. If you’re interested in more common storage mistakes to avoid, click here

The Best Locks For Secure Self Storage

Let’s get down to details. We know that disk, padlock, and cylinder are the safest types of locks, but you might be wondering about some exact choices. Below are three great options to ensure secure self storage.

ABUS 20

If you’re looking for an uber-secure lock at a reasonable price, you can’t go wrong with the ABUS 20 disk lock. At approximately $50, this lock offers many beneficial safety features. The shape of this lock itself is a safety measure, and it has an extremely small opening in the shackle, making it nearly impossible to be meddled with. Additionally, it is made with stainless steel, and therefore resistant to severe weather.

Medeco System Series

If strength of lock is especially important to you, the Medeco System Series padlock could be the perfect option. This lock is weather resistant and sports a shrouded shackle. This lock is stainless steel, and has hardened inserts that protect it from unwanted drilling. Plus, it has a patented triple lock feature which makes it nearly impossible to pick. However, these features come at a higher price than the ABUS 20, at around $125.

EVVA MCS

Choosing a discreet lock can be a smart move when it comes to self storage. A simple-looking lock, like the EVVA MCS,  is beneficial because it is unlikely to be targeted as an easy lock to open. Even if the EVVA MCS does not look like a high-security lock from the outside, it is one of the most secure locks you can purchase. This lock is virtually pick proof, and uses a unique magnetic key system. Additionally, steel is placed to protect the shackle and the body of the lock, making it extremely difficult to break open. Both mechanically and internally, this lock is incredibly versatile and secure. This lock is the most expensive of the three, at approximately $250.
